Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is done to save a severely infected or damaged tooth and relieve pain.
This treatment become necessary when the tooth's core, called the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected due to factors like deep decay, fractures, or trauma.
During the procedure, the dentist or endodontist numbs the area, removes the infected pulp, and thoroughly cleans the inside of the tooth. The inside of the root is then filled with a durable substance called gutta-percha and a filling or crown is placed on top. While root canals can often be completed in one appointment, we may require two appointments if the infection requires treatment before we can begin work. Appointments typically last 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Upon completion of the root canal, we usually recommend placing a crown. The structural integrity of the tooth has often been impacted by the infection or cavity that needed treatment - crowns help to protect the remaining tooth structure and prevent further breakage.
