A frenectomy is a small surgical procedure to fix problems related to the frenum, the small fold of tissue connecting the lips or tongue to the gums.
It is performed when the frenum is tight, short, or thick, and is causing issues with how we speak or how our teeth look. The most common types of frenectomy are for the upper or lower lip and the tongue, also known as a lip tie or tongue tie. By removing or changing the frenum, a dental frenectomy can improve speech clarity, and help to prevent complications such as gum recession.
